Editorial

Sun Valley was created as a destination resort to encourage people to ride the railroad out west. It was the brainchild of Averill Harriman, Chairman of the Board of Union Pacific Railroad, who was himself an avid skier. Born in Massachusetts, Shepler graduated from Williams College and taught painting in and around Boston. He was a Navy combat artist during World War II, from 1942 to 1946. Shepler was an avid sailor and skier; he is well-known for his watercolor ski scenes of New Hampshire. Art of Skiing p. 124.
